The Yobe State Government has directed the immediate closure of all boarding secondary schools in the state following rising security concerns.
The directive was announced in a statement issued on Saturday by Mamman Mohammed, Director-General of Press and Media Affairs to Governor Mai Mala Buni.
According to the statement, the decision was taken as a proactive measure to protect students across the state. It followed a security meeting between Governor Buni and heads of security agencies, during which recent attacks on schools in parts of the country were reviewed.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Bukar Bukar, has also ordered all affected schools to shut down pending an improvement in the security situation.
Governor Buni urged residents to continue praying for the state’s leadership, security agencies, and for the restoration of peace across Nigeria.
More States, FG Shut Schools Over Insecurity
Yobe joins a growing list of states closing schools as reports of mass abductions continue to mount in northern Nigeria.
Kebbi, Plateau, and Kwara have all ordered school closures in recent days amid rising threats to students and teachers.
The Federal Government has also shut 14 Federal Unity Colleges with immediate effect, pending a review of the security situation in the affected areas.
The closures come after multiple abductions this week, including the kidnapping of 24 students in Kebbi State and about 315 students in Niger State. In a separate incident, gunmen attacked a church in Kwara State, killing two people and kidnapping several worshippers.
President Bola Tinubu has since ordered intensified security nationwide and pledged that all abducted victims will be safely rescued.
