Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has confirmed the release of the 24 schoolgirls abducted from Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area.
The governor emphasized that neither the state nor the Federal Government paid any ransom to secure the girls’ freedom.
“No ransom was paid. The Kebbi State Government did not pay a kobo, and neither did the Federal Government. The rescue was achieved solely through the efforts of the security agencies,”
Governor Idris said.
He added that the children will be officially reunited with their parents on Wednesday.
Governor Idris expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his intervention and directive to security agencies, which he said contributed significantly to the successful rescue operation.
The release was earlier announced in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to him, President Tinubu commended the security agencies for securing the freedom of all victims taken by the terrorists.
The President also urged security operatives to intensify the search for students still held captive in other incidents.
“I am relieved that all the 24 girls have been accounted for. Now, we must, as a matter of urgency, put more boots on the ground in vulnerable areas to avert further incidents of kidnapping. My government will offer all the assistance needed to achieve this,”
President Tinubu stated.
