President Tinubu Transmits Legal Practitioners Bill to National Assembly

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has transmitted the Legal Practitioners Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill to the National Assembly for immediate consideration, advancing his administration’s broad legal sector reforms aimed at strengthening the practice of law in Nigeria.

The proposed bill seeks to raise ethical standards, enhance professional accountability, and expand access to justice nationwide.

Reading the President’s correspondence during Tuesday’s plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio revealed that the bill introduces a number of significant reforms. Key provisions include:

  • Issuance of practice licenses to legal practitioners
  • A mandatory two-year tutelage period for newly qualified lawyers
  • Compulsory continuous professional development (CPD) for all practitioners

These measures are designed to modernize the legal profession, improve service delivery, and ensure higher levels of competence within the bar.

Meanwhile, the Senate adjourned its sitting on Tuesday in line with parliamentary tradition to honor the late Senator Okechukwu Ezea (Enugu North), who passed away last week.
