President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed the release of the 24 schoolgirls abducted by terrorists in Maga, Kebbi State, last week.
The attack occurred at dawn on November 17, when terrorists stormed the school shortly after a military detachment had reportedly left the premises. The Kebbi abduction was followed by similar incidents in Eruku, Kwara State, and Papiri, Niger State, heightening national concern over rising insecurity.
All 38 kidnapped victims in Eruku were rescued on Sunday. On the same day, the Niger State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) announced that 50 of the missing Catholic School students had been located in their parents’ homes.
In a statement issued Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu applauded security agencies for their coordinated efforts in securing the release of all victims taken by the terrorists.
The President directed security agencies to intensify operations to ensure that students still in captivity from other attacks are rescued without delay.
“I am relieved that all the 24 girls have been accounted for. Now, we must, as a matter of urgency, put more boots on the ground in vulnerable areas to avert further incidents of kidnapping. My government will offer all the assistance needed to achieve this,”
President Tinubu said.
The terrorists who attacked the Kebbi school reportedly killed the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, before abducting the students.
