The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested and repatriated a 61-year-old Turkish national, Acar Huseyin, who fled his country after being convicted of fraud earlier this year.
Force spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin announced the development on Tuesday, explaining that Huseyin had been sentenced by the Istanbul Anadolu High Criminal Court but escaped shortly after the ruling to avoid serving his 14-year, eight-month, 10-day prison term. He reportedly travelled through the Middle East before arriving in Nigeria.
According to the police, INTERPOL Ankara issued a Red Notice in July 2025 seeking Huseyin’s arrest. Acting on the alert, INTERPOL NCB Abuja launched discreet, intelligence-driven operations that led to his capture in Abuja.
After completing the required documentation and working with international partners, the NPF repatriated Huseyin to Istanbul to begin his sentence.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun praised the INTERPOL unit for executing a professional operation, emphasising that Nigeria will not serve as a refuge for fugitives or convicted criminals. He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to meeting its international obligations, strengthening global policing partnerships, and combating transnational crime.
