A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, November 27, 2025, dismissed a lawsuit brought by former Binance Head of Financial Crime Compliance, Tigran Gambaryan, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in which he alleged unlawful and prolonged detention.
In his ruling, Justice Umar Mohammed held that Gambaryan’s fundamental rights application could not be used to “interfere” with the Nigerian government’s prosecutorial duties, particularly its investigation into suspected foreign exchange violations and alleged money laundering linked to the Binance platform.
Gambaryan had sued both the EFCC and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), seeking compensation and damages for what he described as unjustified detention by security agencies amid the Federal Government’s probe into Binance over money laundering and FX contravention allegations.
During the proceedings, EFCC counsel Olanrewaju Adeola argued that Gambaryan’s detention was lawful, stating that it stemmed from active charges involving money laundering and foreign exchange infractions. He characterized the suit as “a gross abuse of court processes.”
The court ultimately agreed with the EFCC’s position and dismissed the case.
