Liverpool’s nightmarish season plunged to new depths on Wednesday as PSV Eindhoven stormed to a ruthless 4–1 victory at Anfield, handing the troubled Premier League champions their ninth defeat in 12 matches across all competitions.
Arne Slot’s side fell behind early to an Ivan Perisic penalty, and although Dominik Szoboszlai quickly restored parity, the equaliser sparked no meaningful revival. Instead, Liverpool collapsed after the break, conceding three unanswered goals through Guus Til and a Couhaib Driouech brace in a performance that left their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread.
The humiliation—Liverpool’s third straight defeat and their worst run since the 1953–54 season—was met with resounding boos from furious home supporters. Just days after a 3–0 loss to Nottingham Forest at Anfield, the Reds’ defensive frailties and waning confidence were once again brutally exposed.
Liverpool now sit 12th in the Premier League, their lowest position in over a decade, and their Champions League campaign is equally imperiled. Wednesday’s defeat—Liverpool’s first home loss in the competition’s league phase in five years—leaves them 13th in the standings, outside the automatic top-eight qualification spots.
Slot, who admitted this week to feeling “guilty” over the team’s “ridiculous” decline, appeared powerless as fans vacated their seats long before full-time, a stark symbol of dwindling faith in the Dutchman’s methods.
Fragile Liverpool Unravel Again
Slot benched British-record signing Alexander Isak in an attempt to spark a response, but Liverpool became the first English club to lose at home to PSV since 2008, undone by a familiar lack of intensity, poor decision-making, and repeated failures to defend transitions.
Captain Virgil van Dijk—who had urged teammates to take responsibility—gave away a needless penalty in the sixth minute by raising his arm to block a corner. Perisic calmly dispatched the spot-kick as the Kop fell silent.
Ten minutes later, Liverpool were level when Cody Gakpo forced a save from Matej Kovar, allowing Szoboszlai to sweep home the rebound.
Van Dijk nearly redeemed himself with a header against the bar, while Kovar’s sharp stop denied Hugo Ekitike, but Liverpool’s momentum evaporated after the break.
In the 56th minute, Mauro Júnior’s incisive ball split the defence, and Til raced through to slot past Giorgi Mamardashvili. Gakpo wasted a glaring chance minutes later, heading over from close range—an error that proved costly.
Liverpool imploded soon after. Ibrahima Konaté’s sloppy pass gifted possession to Ricardo Pepi, whose shot struck the post before Driouech buried the rebound. PSV then completed the rout in stoppage time as Sergiño Dest burst down the flank and crossed for Driouech to finish clinically.
