Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.
In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Badaru attributed his decision to step down to health concerns.
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed appreciation for Badaru’s service to the nation. A formal communication to the Senate regarding his replacement is expected later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, 63, served two terms as Governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before his appointment as Defence Minister on August 21, 2023.
His departure comes at a critical moment, following President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, with further details of the initiative expected to be announced soon.
