President Tinubu vows to transform unstable zones into hubs of economic activity

President Bola Tinubu has pledged that his administration will convert areas previously plagued by insecurity into vibrant centres of economic growth. He made the commitment on Tuesday while launching the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Appeal Emblem at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President outlined gains achieved under the government’s security reforms, including mass surrenders of insurgents, the neutralisation of key terrorist leaders, improved joint military operations, and enhanced maritime security.

Tinubu revealed that the Ministry of Defence is developing a programme to reclaim ungoverned spaces nationwide by deploying the expertise of retired military personnel. According to him, the initiative aims to secure vulnerable communities, restore government authority, and transform unstable zones into productive economic hubs.

Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to the welfare of security personnel, the President highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade military barracks, increase troop allowances, expand healthcare access, and improve pension verification processes for retired service members.

He commended the armed forces for their courage in tackling terrorism, insurgency, banditry, oil theft, piracy, and other threats, noting that their sacrifices have restored stability to numerous communities.

Tinubu stressed that the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15, should remain a solemn occasion for the nation to honour those who paid the ultimate price for unity and peace. He described it as a “sacred duty” for the country to support the families of fallen heroes and care for those still serving under difficult conditions.

“As a grateful nation, we must honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answer the call to serve,” he said.

The President announced a donation of ₦200 million to support the Remembrance Day activities. Senate President Godswill Akpabio contributed ₦100 million, while the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, donated ₦20 million, bringing the total to ₦320 million.

Tinubu also unveiled the “Thank a Soldier” QR code platform, designed to enable Nigerians at home and abroad to send messages of appreciation to service members. He said the initiative promotes digital engagement and encourages youth participation in national service.

The President ended his address by urging Nigerians to reject divisive rhetoric and embrace tolerance and respect, describing the nation’s diversity as an asset that must be preserved.

The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, several ministers, and heads of security agencies.
