In response to escalating national security concerns, the Senate has undertaken a significant reorganization of several key standing committees, fulfilling its earlier commitment to overhaul the National Security and Intelligence Committee.
The announcement was made during Tuesday’s plenary session by the Senate Selection Committee, chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Under the new committee structure, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi of Kebbi State has been appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, a role he assumes after previously leading the National Planning Committee.
The Senate also made changes to the Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry, naming Senator Shehu Buba of Bauchi State as its new chairman. His appointment follows his recent removal as head of the National Security and Intelligence Committee.
Additionally, Senator Mustafa Musa of Yobe State has been named Chairman of the National Planning Committee.
Further adjustments were made to the Senate Committee on Air Force, where Senate Minority Whip, Senator Osita Ngwu of Enugu State, has been appointed Acting Chairman. Senator Ngwu, formerly the panel’s deputy chairman, steps in following the temporary incapacity of former chairman Senator Akwashiki.
According to Senate leadership, the reconstitution of these committees is aimed at strengthening legislative oversight and enhancing the institution’s capacity to address the nation’s evolving security challenges.
