The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has expressed deep concern over a serious traffic incident that occurred early Monday on the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge, inward Maryland along the Ikorodu Road corridor, which left a delivery motorcyclist with a severe limb fracture.
According to preliminary investigations, the crash was linked to residual traffic disruptions caused by an earlier truck fire on the same bridge. The aftermath of the inferno had created heavy gridlock across the entire Ikorodu Road axis.
Amid the prolonged congestion, a private ambulance (BED 508 EA) transporting a pregnant woman on oxygen support illegally drove against traffic (one-way) at high speed. The reckless manoeuvre resulted in a violent collision with a delivery motorcyclist lawfully riding in his lane, leaving him with a grievous fracture to his right knee.
Swift Multi-Agency Emergency Response
LASTMA officers immediately alerted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), which deployed two ambulances to the crash site.
- The pregnant woman and her life-support equipment were safely transferred into one LASAMBUS unit.
- The second ambulance transported the critically injured motorcyclist to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.
The driver of the private ambulance was arrested at the scene by LASTMA officials and handed over to officers of the Ogudu Police Division for further interrogation and possible prosecution under relevant traffic and criminal laws.
LASTMA also supervised the safe recovery and removal of the damaged ambulance and the crushed motorcycle, both of which were transferred to the Ogudu Police Division as part of ongoing investigations. Police operatives provided security throughout the rescue and evacuation process to preserve evidence and guarantee public safety.
LASTMA Reiterates Zero Tolerance for One-Way Driving
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the incident, stressing the agency’s uncompromising zero-tolerance stance on driving against traffic—a violation he described as one of the most dangerous and deadly behaviours on Lagos roads.
He urged all ambulance operators and emergency service drivers to strictly observe safety protocols, particularly when conveying vulnerable patients, to prevent avoidable tragedies.
Bakare-Oki also wished both the injured delivery rider and the expectant mother a swift recovery, reaffirming LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring order, compliance, and civility across all Lagos transportation corridors.
