Two separate road accidents in Lagos in the early hours of Monday have left two people dead and two others critically injured, prompting the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to again warn motorists against excessive speeding and reckless driving.
In a statement issued by LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the first crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. at Otedola Bridge, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway outbound toward Berger.
Fatal Crash at Otedola Bridge
Preliminary findings indicate that an unregistered vehicle carrying the driver and one passenger collided violently with a heavily loaded trailer. The impact killed both occupants instantly, while the trailer driver allegedly fled the scene.
LASTMA’s Night-Gang Teams, deployed for overnight surveillance, arrived promptly to evacuate the victims and clear the wreckage to prevent further accidents. Officers from the Isheri Police Division and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SHEMU) later handled the removal of the bodies in line with emergency procedures.
Two Injured in Third Mainland Bridge Collision
A second crash occurred around 5:00 a.m. near the UNILAG waterfront on the Third Mainland Bridge, heading toward Lagos Island. An empty tanker collided with a pure-water distribution van (registration SMK 67 XH), leaving two individuals severely injured.
Operatives of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) stabilised the victims at the scene before rushing them to a nearby hospital for critical care.
Despite the incidents, LASTMA personnel maintained traffic flow on both corridors, preventing major disruptions and safeguarding motorists.
LASTMA Warns Against Speeding
Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the bereaved families, describing both tragedies as “wholly preventable.” He identified reckless speeding and disregard for road safety regulations as the primary causes.
He stressed the need for strict adherence to government-approved speed limits to prevent further loss of life.
The LASTMA boss also commended the professionalism and swift action of the agency’s Night-Gang Teams, reaffirming LASTMA’s commitment to 24-hour surveillance and rapid emergency response across Lagos in line with the state government’s public safety mandate.
