Three Dead in Tragic Multi-Vehicle Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Lagos, Nigeria – December 10, 2025 — A fatal multi-vehicle collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed three lives, leaving several others severely injured and causing major traffic disruption along one of Nigeria’s busiest transport corridors.

The crash occurred near the Secretariat axis, heading toward the notorious Otedola Bridge, when three vehicles collided in a violent pile-up. Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene of mangled wreckage and panicked calls for help as morning commuters were thrust into chaos.

Emergency responders quickly mobilised. The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) provided urgent medical assistance to victims, while the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigerian Police Force cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents and maintain order. Recovery teams are currently clearing debris to ease the gridlock affecting thousands of motorists.

This latest tragedy adds to a worrying pattern of recurrent accidents on the expressway. Just yesterday, a two-truck collision near Otedola Bridge left one driver hospitalised after both vehicles collided while struggling for passage — spilling cargo and leaving motorists stranded for hours.

Only days earlier, two people were killed in another high-speed crash on the Berger axis of the same corridor, when an unregistered vehicle rammed into a trailer.

Road safety advocates say the frequency of such incidents reflects longstanding structural challenges, including reckless driving, congested roadways, and pressure on aging infrastructure — issues that urgently require government and stakeholder intervention.

LASTMA has advised commuters to exercise extreme caution while passing the area and to use alternative routes such as CMD-Magodo and under-bridge connectors to avoid the bottleneck. The agency first reported the incident at 6:39 a.m. GMT via its official X handle, @followlastma.

As emergency operations continue, thoughts remain with the families of the deceased, the injured battling for recovery, and the responders working tirelessly at the scene.
