EPL: Manchester United Held to 4–4 Thriller by Resilient Bournemouth at Old Trafford

Manchester United squandered the lead on three occasions as Bournemouth fought back to earn a pulsating 4–4 draw at Old Trafford, denying the hosts a chance to climb into the Premier League’s top five.

Although United have lost just once in their last 10 league matches, head coach Ruben Amorim will rue another missed opportunity at home, with defensive lapses overshadowing what was arguably his side’s most fluent attacking display since his appointment.

United took the lead in the 13th minute when Amad Diallo nodded into an empty net after Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic could only parry Matheus Cunha’s header. The visitors responded through Antoine Semenyo, before Casemiro restored United’s advantage to give the hosts a 2–1 lead at half-time.

Bournemouth emerged strongly after the break, turning the game on its head with two goals in seven minutes. Evanilson levelled the score before Marcus Tavernier fired the Cherries in front, exposing United’s continuing defensive fragility.

The Red Devils responded in emphatic fashion. Bruno Fernandes curled home a superb free-kick to make it 3–3 before Cunha netted his second goal for the club to put United back in front at 4–3.

Yet, just as in recent home draws against Everton and West Ham, United were unable to close out the game. Eli Junior Kroupi struck a fine equaliser to secure a point for Bournemouth, who came agonisingly close to snatching all three points in stoppage time, with David Brooks twice denied by goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Despite ending a seven-game winless run, the draw lifts Bournemouth to 13th in the table. United, meanwhile, move into sixth place, edging ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.

Encouraging Signs Despite Frustration

While the result will disappoint Amorim, there were positives in United’s attacking play. The forward line, assembled at great cost, showed cohesion and creativity rarely seen earlier in the season.

Diallo’s early opener set the tone, while Cunha was again influential. Bryan Mbeumo, making his final appearance before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations, went close but fired wide from a promising Cunha cross.

Going forward, United looked sharper and more confident than at any point this season. However, defensive frailties once again proved costly, leaving Amorim with mixed emotions after a night of high drama at Old Trafford.
