Egypt Defeat Super Eagles 2–1 in Pre-AFCON Friendly

Egypt secured a morale-boosting 2–1 victory over Nigeria’s Super Eagles in an international friendly played in Cairo on Tuesday night, just days before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The hosts took a deserved lead just before the half-hour mark when Mahmoud Saber finished off a well-worked move, tapping in at the back post after being set up by the lively Ahmed Sayed “Zizo”, who troubled the Nigerian defence throughout the first half.

Nigeria struggled for cohesion in attack but showed flashes of intent. They nearly benefited from an error when Paul Onuachu’s long ball almost resulted in an own goal by Yasser Ibrahim, only for a fine save to avert the danger.

That moment sparked the Super Eagles into life, and they drew level soon after. A free kick from Zaidu Sanusi on the left was mishandled by Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, who fumbled the ball at his near post. The loose ball fell kindly for Chidozie Awaziem, who headed home from close range to make it 1–1.

Egypt, however, emerged from the break with renewed intensity. Once again, Zizo was the creator, carving out space for Mostafa Mohamed, who struck decisively from inside the box to restore the Pharaohs’ lead.

Nigeria failed to find a response as Egypt controlled the closing stages and saw out the win.

Both teams will now turn their attention to the AFCON tournament proper, with Egypt set to open their campaign against Zimbabwe on Monday, while Nigeria face Tanzania the following day.
