The Nigerian Senate has called on the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to investigate circulating social media rumours claiming that Senate President Godswill Akpabio has collapsed, and in some instances, alleging his death.
The directive followed a point of order under Order 42 raised by Senator Titus Zam, who described the rumours circulating over the past 48 hours as “alarming and unacceptable.” Senator Zam stressed that as the nation’s third-highest official, the Senate President should not be subjected to such misinformation.
In response, Senate President Akpabio acknowledged the challenge of controlling narratives on social media, referring to the posts as “garbage in, garbage out.” He, however, agreed to submit the matter to the NSA for investigation.
The Senate adopted the proposal through a voice vote, resolving that the NSA probe the source and intent of the rumours surrounding his alleged collapse.
