Wilfred Ndidi has been officially named the new captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The 29-year-old defensive midfielder of Besiktas, who previously served as vice-captain, succeeds William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa, both of whom retired from international duty. Ndidi assumed the role on Friday after the team arrived in Morocco and their first training session ahead of the tournament.
Speaking to the team’s media, Ndidi emphasized the importance of collaboration with senior squad members and staff to ensure a smooth transition into his leadership role.
“It’s a huge responsibility,” he said. “With the support of my teammates, I believe everything will go smoothly. I’ve spoken with some of the senior players to help them understand our purpose here, and we need the continued support of the staff. We’re all in this together.”
The Super Eagles missed out on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup after losing in the continental playoffs, but Ndidi sees AFCON 2025 as a chance for redemption.
“It was disappointing to miss the World Cup, but AFCON presents another opportunity to correct mistakes, bring smiles to Nigerians, and make our country proud,” he said. “It won’t be easy, but we’re ready and eager to give our best.”
Ndidi will captain Nigeria in their opening group match against Tanzania on December 23.
