The Federal Government has declared December 25 and 26, 2025, as well as January 1, 2026, as public holidays to mark Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and the New Year celebrations.
The announcement was made on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Magdalene Ajani. She said the declaration was in line with the government’s tradition of recognising key religious and national celebrations.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to reflect on the values of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice associated with the birth of Jesus Christ, noting that these virtues are essential for national unity and harmony.
The minister also urged Nigerians, regardless of religion or ethnicity, to use the festive season to pray for peace, security, and national progress, while supporting government efforts aimed at development and cohesion.
According to him, the Christmas and New Year period provides an opportunity for citizens to strengthen unity, show compassion to one another, and renew their commitment to nation-building.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo further advised Nigerians to remain law-abiding and security-conscious during the celebrations, and to cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful festive season.
He concluded by wishing Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
