Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has expressed confidence and optimism ahead of Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign, insisting the team is united, motivated, and ready to respond after recent disappointments.
Ndidi, who was named captain only days ago, said expectations around the squad are high and that the atmosphere in camp reflects a collective determination to succeed.
“The expectation is really high. Everyone is talking about it, the mood in camp is very positive, and the boys are really excited,” the 28-year-old said in an interview with POOJA on Tuesday.
“We are ready for the challenge.”
One of Nigeria’s most experienced internationals, the former Leicester City midfielder described his appointment as captain as a privilege and an honour, acknowledging the added responsibility that comes with leading the national team.
“It’s really exciting. It’s the same player, just with much improvement and more responsibility,” Ndidi said.
“Being captain of the Super Eagles is a privilege, and I’m ready to lead the team and give everything, with the support of the senior players, the coaching staff, and the management.”
Seeking redemption
Nigeria head into the tournament determined to bounce back after the painful failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a setback that deeply affected both players and supporters.
Ndidi admitted the disappointment still lingers but believes AFCON offers the Super Eagles an opportunity to restore confidence and pride.
“Not qualifying for the World Cup was really sad for us as players and for Nigerians,” he said.
“But this tournament is a big step for us to get something positive again.”
Three-time African champions, Nigeria will be aiming to reaffirm their status as one of the continent’s football heavyweights when they begin their AFCON campaign against Tanzania in their Group C opener on Tuesday.
