The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has renovated over 100 public schools across the nation’s capital, according to the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Education Secretariat, Danlami Hayyo.
Hayyo made the disclosure on Monday during an interview with journalists, shortly after resuming office following the lifting of his suspension. He described the scale of the ongoing school rehabilitation programme as unprecedented, noting that no state in the federation is currently matching the FCT’s level of investment in education infrastructure.
“What the minister is doing now, definitely, no state in the federation is doing it. Over 100 schools have been completely renovated,” Hayyo said.
He explained that while several projects have already been completed, others are still ongoing, adding that between 60 and 70 per cent of the school renovation projects will be completed by the first quarter of 2026, paving the way for a series of commissioning ceremonies.
“If you go to some of our schools, you feel like you are in London, France, or Germany — yet you are in an FCT public school,” he added.
Loyalty and continuity
The mandate secretary reaffirmed his full loyalty to the FCT Minister, expressing gratitude to Wike for recalling him and pledging to sustain the minister’s education transformation agenda.
“I want to tell you clearly: my loyalty to the FCT Minister is 100 per cent,” Hayyo stated.
He stressed that his return would focus on continuity, ensuring that all ongoing reforms and infrastructure projects proceed without interruption.
Reforms and internal discipline
Addressing the circumstances surrounding his suspension — reportedly linked to an unauthorised communication by a director — Hayyo announced refresher training for directors and senior staff as an immediate priority.
“We have to embark on refresher training to ensure all directors understand their mandate, how to carry out their duties, and when to consult superior officers,” he said.
He explained that directors are not permitted to issue or circulate official communications without proper clearance from the mandate secretary and the minister.
School safety assurances
On the issue of security, Hayyo gave strong assurances to parents, teachers, and students, insisting that FCT schools remain safe.
“All FCT schools are very safe. We do not have any security threats in FCT schools,” he said.
Focus areas
Hayyo outlined his priorities for the Education Secretariat to include:
- Staff training and capacity building
- Sustained infrastructural development
- School safety and discipline
He expressed confidence that the education reforms initiated under Wike’s leadership would continue to transform the learning environment across the FCT.
