The Lagos State Police Command has deployed 5,000 traffic officers as part of comprehensive security measures to ensure smooth and safe Christmas and New Year celebrations across the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed this on Monday evening while briefing journalists on the command’s security arrangements for the yuletide season.
According to him, the police have intensified security at worship centres, recreational facilities, and other public spaces to guarantee the safety of residents and visitors during the festive period.
Acknowledging the increased patronage of beach resorts and island destinations, CP Jimoh said the command’s recently established special marine squad has been actively patrolling riverine areas, complementing the efforts of existing marine command personnel.
He further revealed that the police have deployed 21 gunboats and specialised units to strengthen maritime security, particularly along Lagos waterways and the recently opened Coastal Highway.
To ensure strict operational readiness, Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers have been placed on red alert, with a warning that any officer found negligent would face appropriate disciplinary action.
The police chief also disclosed that known black spots and flashpoints across the state are being raided regularly to prevent criminal elements from regrouping or planning attacks.
“We have deployed more detectives on the streets, especially at night, to protect residents and visitors. Our security network has been strengthened on land and waterways,” Jimoh said.
Assuring the public of adequate security, the commissioner stated that the police remain in firm control of the security situation. He urged residents and visitors coming into Lagos for end-of-year festivities to go about their activities without fear, stressing that robust measures have been put in place to ensure a peaceful yuletide and beyond.
