A new batch of documents related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, released by the US government on Tuesday, contains numerous references to President Donald Trump, including records detailing flights he allegedly took on Epstein’s private jet. The release has reignited political controversy and debate over transparency in the long-running Epstein case.
The documents form part of previously unseen materials from federal investigations into Epstein, who died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking underage girls. Epstein had already been a convicted sex offender before the more serious trafficking case was brought against him.
The latest disclosure follows an earlier release last Friday of heavily redacted files, which drew criticism from lawmakers and the public over alleged delays and omissions—particularly claims that references to Trump were initially excluded.
Justice Department responds
Trump features prominently in the thousands of pages released on Tuesday, although many mentions are drawn from media reports rather than direct testimony or evidence. In response, the US Justice Department moved quickly to defend the president.
In a statement posted on X, the department said:
“Some of these documents contain untrue and sensationalist claims made against President Trump that were submitted to the FBI right before the 2020 election.”
The department did not specify which claims it considers false. Trump has not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.
Political pressure and release of files
Trump had previously sought to block the release of the Epstein documents. However, bipartisan pressure within Congress, including dissent from members of his own Republican Party, ultimately forced him to sign legislation mandating the disclosure of the full archive.
The move reflected widespread public suspicion that earlier handling of the Epstein case was intended to shield wealthy and influential individuals linked to him.
Private jet travel claims
Among the most significant revelations is a January 2020 memo from New York federal prosecutors investigating Epstein’s associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, which claims that Trump traveled on Epstein’s private jet more frequently than previously reported.
“Records we received yesterday reflect that Donald Trump traveled on Epstein’s private jet many more times than previously has been reported,” the memo stated.
One alleged flight reportedly included only Epstein, Trump, and an unidentified 20-year-old woman. These claims, however, remain unproven, and Trump has denied any misconduct.
Trump has acknowledged being friends with Epstein in the past but has given varying accounts of how their relationship ended, including claims that he banned Epstein from his Florida golf club for inappropriate behavior.
Disputed and unverifiable claims
Some references in the documents are impossible to independently verify, including a handwritten letter allegedly written by Epstein while in jail to Larry Nassar, the former US gymnastics doctor imprisoned for sexual abuse. The letter contains crude and inflammatory remarks attributed to Epstein about powerful figures, including the president.
Calls for further investigation
Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the files suggest the Justice Department investigated at least ten possible Epstein co-conspirators, raising questions about why no further prosecutions followed.
“The Department of Justice needs to shed more light on who was on the list, how they were involved, and why they chose not to prosecute,” Schumer said.
Lawmakers Ro Khanna (Democrat) and Thomas Massie (Republican), co-sponsors of the law compelling the release, have threatened contempt of Congress proceedings against Attorney General Pam Bondi over delays in publishing the full records.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the staggered release was necessary to protect the identities of more than 1,000 victims mentioned in the files.
Current status
Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former girlfriend and associate, remains the only person convicted in connection with his crimes.
The latest release is expected to fuel continued scrutiny of the Epstein case, the Justice Department’s handling of it, and the broader question of accountability among powerful figures linked to the disgraced financier.
