Residents of Gebbe community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State have fled their homes following a deadly attack by gunmen that left an unspecified number of people dead and several others injured.
Local sources said the attack came without warning, plunging the community into fear and confusion. The assailants reportedly invaded the area and opened fire indiscriminately, forcing residents to escape to neighbouring villages and nearby bushes for safety.
According to the sources, the scale of the attack and the displacement of residents have made it difficult to determine the exact number of casualties at this time.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Kebbi State, Bashir Usman, told Channels Television that the attack did occur and that security operatives are currently responding. He said officers are assessing the situation to establish the number of deaths and injuries, adding that an official statement would be released later.
Some residents, who requested anonymity, disclosed that security agencies have already been deployed to the affected area.
Community members have appealed to the government and security agencies for urgent intervention, describing the assault as devastating.
Efforts to reach the village head for further details were unsuccessful, as calls to him went unanswered.
