Two people tragically lost their lives in a road accident involving former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua on Monday in Nigeria. The victims have been identified by Joshua’s promoter as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, described as “close friends and team members.”
According to Matchroom Boxing, Joshua sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to the hospital for checks and treatment. He is currently in stable condition and remains under observation.
The accident occurred around 11:00 am local time (1000 GMT) in Makun, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua was suspected of exceeding the speed limit. The vehicle lost control during an overtaking maneuver and collided with a stationary truck by the side of the road.
Joshua, whose family originates from southwestern Nigeria, is known to visit the country frequently. Earlier this month, the former Olympic gold medalist defeated YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a Netflix-backed fight in Miami.
