The 2026 FIFA World Cup has rewritten the tournament’s history books, setting new records for stadium attendance, global television viewership, and fan engagement, driven by the expanded 48-team format.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino described the tournament as the biggest and most successful World Cup ever, saying it had “exceeded all expectations.” He noted that the addition of 16 more teams significantly boosted global interest and participation.
The tournament attracted more than 6.8 million spectators across 104 matches hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, eclipsing the previous attendance record of 3.59 million set during the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. Stadiums operated at an impressive 99.7 per cent capacity, with an average attendance of over 65,000 fans per match.
Beyond the packed stadiums, the competition also shattered television audience records. Although FIFA is yet to release official viewing figures, the governing body confirmed that global broadcast audiences surpassed previous World Cup records by a considerable margin, while digital engagement reached unprecedented levels. FIFA estimated that 5.2 billion people—nearly two-thirds of the world’s population—had interacted with the tournament across television, digital platforms, and social media by the end of the Round of 16.
The commercial success of the tournament has also been significant. FIFA projected record revenues exceeding $8 billion for 2026, representing a 56 per cent increase over the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, driven by higher broadcasting rights, sponsorship deals, and commercial partnerships.
The expanded competition also delivered increased financial rewards for participating nations, with the overall prize pool rising to $871 million, while the eventual champions, Spain, received $50 million in prize money.
Following the tournament’s overwhelming success, FIFA has indicated that discussions are underway on a possible expansion to 64 teams for the centenary edition of the World Cup in 2030.
