British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital following a road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami.
The update was confirmed in a joint statement issued on Wednesday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, and the Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Kayode Akinmade. The statement conveyed the condolences of both state governments to the families of the deceased.
“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again sympathise with the families of Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who tragically lost their lives in the accident involving Anthony Joshua. We pray that Almighty God grants the repose of their souls and gives their families the strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement said.
According to the statement, Joshua was discharged late on Tuesday after being certified clinically fit to continue his recovery at home. It noted that the boxer was deeply saddened and emotionally affected by the loss of his two friends.
The statement also disclosed that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos on Tuesday to pay his last respects to the deceased, whose remains were being prepared for repatriation later that day.
Appreciation was also extended to the medical team at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for the quality of care and professionalism shown to Joshua and other injured victims.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and members of the public for their support during the period.
The accident occurred at about 11 a.m. on Monday when the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua reportedly collided with a stationary truck along the expressway, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to other occupants.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, as authorities continue to manage the aftermath and have appealed for public patience and cooperation.
