Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has held a closed-door strategic meeting with prominent Igbo leaders to deliberate on the place of the South-East in Nigeria’s political landscape.
The meeting, which took place in Amechi Awkunanaw, Enugu, was attended by elder statesmen and political figures, including former Governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo, and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.
The consultation comes amid ongoing political alignments and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections and is part of renewed efforts by South-East leaders to build consensus and strengthen the region’s influence in national politics.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Senator Jim Nwobodo said the engagement was consultative and reflective, aimed at addressing uncertainties surrounding the role of the Igbo in national affairs. He stressed the need for the region to secure a clearly defined and respected position within Nigeria’s power structure.
The leaders emphasised unity as a critical factor in enhancing the South-East’s political relevance, noting that internal divisions remain one of the major obstacles to the region’s influence at the national level.
They added that the dialogue would be widened to include more stakeholders across the South-East, to forge a united front and ensure that the Igbo remain strategically positioned in Nigeria’s political equation.
