The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims that it has issued a timetable or schedule for the 2027 General Election.
In a statement released by the Media Adviser to INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, on Friday, the Commission firmly stated that such reports are false and misleading.
“INEC has not released any timetable or schedule for the 2027 General Election,” the statement said.
The Commission emphasized its commitment to operating within the boundaries of the law, particularly Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates that an election notice must be published no later than 360 days before a general election.
INEC further clarified that any timetable or schedule issued outside this legal framework is not authorized by the Commission.
The Commission reassured the public that the official timetable and schedule for the 2027 General Election will be made public at the appropriate time, in full compliance with Nigeria’s Constitution and Electoral Act.
Once finalized, the Commission assured Nigerians that the timetable will be shared through its official and verified communication channels. It also urged the public and media to disregard false reports and rely on INEC’s official platforms for accurate information.
In his New Year message, Chairman Amupitan reiterated INEC’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and inclusive elections in 2027. He stressed that preparations are already underway to strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
Reflecting on INEC’s achievements in 2025, Amupitan praised the Commission’s staff for their dedication, particularly highlighting the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election, which took place shortly after he assumed office on October 23. He emphasized that these efforts demonstrate the Commission’s ability to protect the integrity of the vote and enhance public confidence in the electoral process.
