Police Confirm Benue Attack, Say Four Persons Killed

Makurdi – The Benue State Police Command has confirmed an attack on Otobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area, resulting in the death of four persons.

Gunmen reportedly invaded the community in the early hours of Tuesday, sparking panic among residents. Earlier reports had put the death toll at five.

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, clarified that four people were killed during the incident.

“We can confirm that an incident occurred earlier today at Otobi-Akpa. Tragically, four individuals have lost their lives,” Edet said.

Among those reportedly killed is Igbabe Ochi, a former House of Assembly candidate for the Otukpo-Akpa State Constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2019 general election, though police did not officially confirm the identities of the victims.

The police spokesperson expressed condolences to the families of those affected and assured residents that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones affected by this incident. Investigation is ongoing, and concerted efforts are being made to apprehend those responsible,” he stated.

The latest attack comes amid heightened tension in the area following a kidnap attempt on Sunday night at Ekwu-Ora’Odaba in Otobi, which was foiled by community volunteer guards led by Ocheme Jackson. The incident had placed the community on high security alert.

Local sources say Otobi has been repeatedly targeted by suspected armed herdsmen in recent times. The community recorded the killing of 13 persons on April 15, 2025, followed by another attack in May 2025 that claimed three lives.

Security agencies have since intensified patrols in the area as residents continue to call for stronger protection.
