A Magistrate Court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, 46, the driver involved in the fatal accident that killed heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami. The trial will continue on February 25, 2026.
Kayode was first charged on January 2, 2026, before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun. He faces a four-count charge, including:
- Dangerous driving causing death (Section 5(1), Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135)
- Reckless and negligent driving (Section 6(1))
- Driving without due care causing bodily harm and property damage (Section 7(1))
- Driving without a valid national driver’s licence (Section 10(1))
The adjournment was requested by the prosecution, led by Nijiwe Richard, to duplicate the case file to the Ogun State Attorney General’s office for advice. The defense, represented by Abiodun Olalekan, initially opposed the delay but the court granted the request. Kayode was granted ₦5,000,000 bail with two sureties.
The accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway when Kayode’s Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck. Ayodele and Ghami tragically died, while Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries. Joshua was later discharged from the hospital.
The boxer, accompanied by his mother, visited the Lagos funeral home to pay respects before the remains of Ayodele and Ghami were flown to the United Kingdom for a funeral service at the London Central Mosque on January 4, 2026.
The deaths of Ghami and Ayodele, key members of Joshua’s training team, have sent shockwaves through the international boxing community.
