The Kwara State Government has directed the immediate shutdown of the Kwara State College of Education, Oro, citing worsening security conditions in the area.
The directive, contained in an internal memo dated January 20, 2026, was issued by the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology and signed by the Commissioner, Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, following the approval of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
According to the memo, the decision was prompted by growing insecurity around the institution and forms part of a wider government order to temporarily close all schools within the affected local government area.
The government said the move was taken to safeguard the lives of students, staff, and residents, adding that the closure will remain in effect pending a full security assessment and further instructions.
The development comes amid heightened security challenges in parts of Kwara South and North, where communities have recently experienced banditry, kidnappings, and other criminal activities.
