Seven people have been confirmed dead after suspected bandits attacked an illegal mining site at Capitex in the Kuru community of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, the Nigerian Army has confirmed.
The attack reportedly occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, when armed assailants invaded the site, allegedly attempting to make away with illegally mined minerals.
Troops of Sector 6, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), were alerted to the incident at about 8:40 a.m. by a resident and swiftly deployed to the area to restore calm.
According to a senior military source, security personnel recovered ammunition during a sweep of the site, including 10 empty shells of 7.62mm special ammunition believed to have been used by the attackers.
Security forces say they have maintained a strong presence in the area to prevent any breakdown of law and order and to reassure residents of their safety.
