Ryan Coogler’s vampire period horror film Sinners has made history by earning a record-breaking 16 nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, the Academy announced on Thursday.
The blues-inspired drama, set in the segregated American South, received nominations across nearly all major categories, including Best Picture. Written, produced, and directed by Coogler, the 2025 supernatural film stars Michael B. Jordan and explores themes of Black American history, music, and the supernatural in the Mississippi Delta.
The film surpassed the previous Oscars record of 14 nominations held by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land. Its haul includes a Best Actor nod for Jordan, who portrays twin brothers confronting both supernatural forces and racial hatred, along with nominations for screenplay, score, and other technical categories.
Sinners also earned a nomination for Best Casting, a newly introduced category—the first addition to the Oscars in more than 20 years.
Trailing behind was One Battle After Another with 13 nominations, including Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio. Other strong contenders included Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value with nine nominations each, while Hamnet received eight.
