Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially withdrawn his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), attributing his decision to prolonged internal crises and ongoing legal battles that he said have undermined the party’s unity at both state and national levels.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. According to the statement, Yusuf conveyed his resignation in a letter addressed to the NNPP Chairman of Diso–Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, with effect from January 25, 2026.
In the letter, the governor expressed gratitude to the NNPP for offering him a political platform since 2022, acknowledging the party’s role in his emergence and tenure in office.
Yusuf explained that persistent leadership disputes and unresolved court cases had continued to destabilise the party, creating deep divisions among members and weakening its organisational structure.
He said his decision followed careful reflection and was taken in the overall interest of Kano State and its people, stressing that it was made in good faith and without ill intent toward the party.
The governor’s exit was followed by the resignation of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen across the state, signalling a major political shift.
The NNPP Secretary of Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the resignation and commended Governor Yusuf’s performance, describing him as one of the party’s most impactful leaders, particularly in the areas of infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.
The development adds to growing political realignments in Kano State ahead of future electoral contests.
