National Grid Collapses Again, Leaving Nigeria in Darkness for the Second Time in 2026

The National Grid has suffered another collapse, marking its second failure in 2026. As of the latest report, power supply to the 11 electricity distribution companies has dropped to zero megawatts, leaving the entire nation without electricity. This comes just days after the first collapse last Friday and follows a similar incident on December 29, 2025, which caused widespread power outages across Nigeria.

The causes of these frequent collapses are attributed to a combination of technical faults, poor maintenance of transmission lines, and instability in power generation capacity. On this occasion, electricity generation dropped dramatically from over 4,500 megawatts to zero, with all 23 power plants connected to the grid reportedly losing output.

At the time of reporting, the exact cause of the collapse remains unclear, and officials from the Transmission Company of Nigeria have yet to issue a detailed statement. This crisis highlights deeper, systemic issues within Nigeria’s power infrastructure, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive reform and investment to prevent further disruptions.

The question remains whether the country can address these persistent issues and restore stability to its national grid.
