The Lagos State Government has announced plans to transform the Obalende under-bridge into a state-of-the-art transport and community facility, named the Y’ELLO Bus Park, in partnership with MTN Nigeria. This ambitious project aims to convert what was once an unsafe, neglected space into a vibrant, functional, and commuter-friendly transport hub for residents and travelers in the Obalende area.
In a statement shared by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the redevelopment is part of the broader vision to reclaim public spaces and enhance urban functionality across the state. Wahab highlighted that the transformation will significantly improve the area’s safety, accessibility, and overall environment.
Key features of the Y’ELLO Bus Park include:
- A regulated transport terminal for organized and efficient commuting.
- A dedicated recycling drop-off station to promote waste management.
- A road camp to house Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers and security personnel.
- Over 60 public toilets to enhance sanitation.
- Kiosks and other amenities designed to serve both commuters and local residents.
The design places a strong emphasis on public safety, health, and aesthetics. Solar-powered lighting will be installed to enhance night-time visibility, reduce blind spots, and improve the effectiveness of CCTV surveillance—aimed at combating criminal activity in the area.
In alignment with Lagos State’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the project will incorporate a biodigester system for wastewater management, alongside a dedicated recycling station to deter waste dumping. Solar panels will be used to promote energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, tree planting will help improve air quality and beautify the area.
This redevelopment effort reflects the government’s determination to enhance public infrastructure, making it cleaner, safer, and more responsive to the needs of the people. The initiative follows recent enforcement actions, including the removal of illegal structures and eviction of squatters beneath the Obalende bridge.
The transformation of Obalende into a modern transport hub marks another milestone in Lagos State’s ongoing development and urban renewal initiatives.
