The Federal Government will arraign suspects linked to the Yelwata killings in Benue State on Monday, February 2, before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
In a statement on Sunday, the Attorney General’s office assured Nigerians that justice would be served, signaling a firm stance against anyone undermining national security. The statement, signed by Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Assistant to the AGF, emphasized the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to protecting lives and property, as enshrined in the constitution.
The arraignment follows a “painstaking investigation and collaboration by government agencies” after gunmen attacked the Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area last June, killing scores and displacing hundreds. Security operatives have since arrested several suspects connected to the attacks.
President Tinubu, during a visit to Benue in the aftermath of the killings, called on security agencies to act decisively, stressing the importance of gathering actionable intelligence to apprehend the masterminds and prevent future incidents.
The attacks also prompted Governor Hyacinth Alia to renew calls for the establishment of state police and an intervention fund for affected communities, highlighting the need for community policing to address the ongoing security challenges in the food-producing state.
