The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recovered a substantial stockpile of live ammunition and arrested multiple suspects, including individuals who allegedly obstructed police officers during operations.
According to DSP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, the recovery took place on 23rd January 2026 at around 11:00 p.m., during a routine stop-and-search patrol along the Calabar–Itu Highway.
“Operatives intercepted a commercial bus, registration number ARR600ZY, en route Calabar. During a thorough search, a carton containing 415 live cartridges was recovered,” DSP John said.
The driver, identified as Ikenna, claimed that the ammunition was not his but was being transported as a waybill consignment for an unidentified recipient in Calabar.
Obstruction and Arrests
During the operation, a commuter named Excel allegedly obstructed police officers by engaging in provocative behavior. Another commuter, Bright, who claimed to be an official of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) but could not provide valid identification, reportedly assaulted officers alongside Excel. Both individuals were promptly arrested.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Ndubisi Raphael, a 36-year-old indigene of Nyaje Village, Akamkpa LGA, Cross River State, in Calabar. He is now in police custody as authorities probe the source and intended use of the ammunition.
Police Response
State Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azae ordered a discreet and thorough investigation to identify and prosecute all culpable parties.
He emphasized the Command’s commitment to combatting the proliferation of illegal arms and warned the public against obstructing police operations. The Commissioner also reassured residents that the police remain steadfast in maintaining peace, safety, and security across Akwa Ibom State.
