Nigeria international Ademola Lookman has arrived in Madrid to undergo medical examinations ahead of completing his permanent transfer from Italian side Atalanta to Atlético Madrid.
The €40 million deal comprises a €35 million fixed fee and €5 million in performance-based add-ons. Lookman, 27, has reportedly signed a long-term contract with Atlético, expected to run until 2030 or 2031, earning around €6 million per season.
Lookman chose Atlético over Fenerbahçe and Inter Milan, a decision influenced by a personal call from manager Diego Simeone, who sees the winger as a key part of the club’s long-term attacking plans and a potential successor to Antoine Griezmann.
The Nigerian forward enjoyed a standout spell at Atalanta, including a historic hat-trick in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final, helping the club claim its first European title. He also starred internationally, earning a Team of the Tournament spot at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with four goals and four assists in six games.
In the 2024/25 Serie A season, Lookman scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 31 league matches, while also contributing significantly in the UEFA Champions League.
Upon completion, Lookman will become the first Nigerian player to feature for Atlético Madrid’s senior team, marking a historic milestone for both the club and Nigerian football. An official announcement is expected once medicals and contractual formalities are finalized.
