Arsenal claimed the inaugural FIFA Women’s Champions Cup on Sunday, defeating Corinthians 3-2 after extra time at the Emirates Stadium. Caitlin Foord scored the decisive goal to secure the victory, earning Arsenal a record $2.3 million prize, nearly four times the amount they received for winning last season’s Champions League.
The tournament, which brought together the champions of six continents for the first time, saw Arsenal as heavy favourites. However, Corinthians, who had shocked US champions Gotham FC in the semi-finals, pushed the European champions to the limit in front of over 25,000 fans.
The match saw early drama as Olivia Smith put Arsenal ahead, only for Gabi Zanotti to equalize for Corinthians. Lotte Wubben-Moy restored Arsenal’s lead before Vic Albuquerque scored a last-minute penalty to force extra time. Arsenal’s depth ultimately prevailed, with Foord’s near-post strike breaking Corinthians’ resistance and sealing the historic triumph.
