The Lagos State Government has expressed deep concern over a serious road traffic accident that occurred at the summit of Apakun Bridge, inward Oshodi, involving a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)–laden heavy-duty truck and a private motor vehicle, resulting in injuries to two pedestrians and a motorist.
Preliminary findings indicate that the truck, bearing registration number EKY 120 YK, was driven at an excessively high and dangerous speed, in clear violation of established traffic safety regulations. The truck forcefully collided with a moving silver Toyota Corolla (EKY 289 HM) at a critical and high-risk section of the bridge. The impact caused severe traffic disruption and posed an immediate threat to lives and property in the surrounding area.
In the course of the collision, two unsuspecting pedestrians were struck, while the driver of the Toyota Corolla sustained serious injuries.
Demonstrating commendable professionalism and swift response, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) promptly arrived at the scene, coordinated an effective rescue operation, and successfully extricated the injured victims from the wreckage. The pedestrians and the injured driver were immediately transported to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently receiving intensive medical care.
To ensure public safety and prevent secondary incidents during the rescue and evacuation process, officers from the Ajao Estate Police Division provided security support, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted emergency response.
Given the hazardous nature of the truck’s CNG cargo, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were also deployed to the scene as a precautionary measure, remaining on standby to manage any potential emergency.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Honourable Sola Giwa, strongly condemned the growing trend of road accidents caused by reckless driving and overspeeding, particularly among operators of trucks, tankers, and articulated vehicles.
He described such conduct as grossly irresponsible, dangerously negligent, and incompatible with the Lagos State Government’s commitment to a safe, orderly, and well-regulated transportation system.
Hon. Giwa issued a stern warning to all operators of articulated vehicles to strictly comply with traffic laws and prescribed speed limits, stressing that the Lagos State Government will invoke the full weight of the law against any individual found endangering lives through reckless or unlawful driving.
He also expressed his heartfelt prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured pedestrians and the driver, while reassuring Lagos residents of the Government’s unwavering commitment to road safety, proactive traffic management, and the protection of all road users.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reiterates its call for collective responsibility on the roads, urging motorists to exercise caution, obey speed limits, and adhere strictly to traffic regulations in the interest of public safety.
