The Lagos State Government has warned against the assumption or display of unauthorised chieftaincy titles, describing the practice as illegal and disruptive to public order.
In an advisory signed by Commissioner Bolaji Robert, the government stated that only the Governor, through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs, and Rural Development, can approve chieftaincy titles. Titles such as “Oba,” “His Royal Majesty,” “His Royal Highness,” and royal paraphernalia like beaded crowns, staffs, and horse whisks are prohibited without official sanction.
The advisory cited the Obas and Chiefs Law of Lagos State 2015, warning that offenders could face up to two years imprisonment. Residents were urged to comply with the law and report any cases of unauthorised titles to authorities.
