The Nigeria Police Force has launched a 90-day training program on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and mental health care for its personnel. The initiative, opened in Jos, Plateau State, is aimed at equipping officers with skills to address trauma and psychological challenges in their commands, especially in conflict-affected states like Borno, Zamfara, Benue, Katsina, and Yobe.
The programme, a collaboration between the Police, University of Jos, and UNDP, comprises 60 days of lectures and 30 days of simulation exercises. Officers are expected to cascade the knowledge to colleagues, enhance community relations, and strengthen police reform efforts.
Prof. Tanko Ishaya, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, highlighted that the training also builds resilience, ethical decision-making, and emotional well-being, marking the first program of its kind in Nigeria where academia meets law enforcement.
