The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Police Force has requested that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, reconsider and reschedule its planned protest on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, citing potential security risks.
The protest, organized in support of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), comes amid an indefinite strike by FCTA workers over unpaid promotion arrears and other entitlements. The NLC had directed affiliate unions to converge at the Labour House by 7:00 a.m. for the demonstration.
In a statement, FCT Police Public Relations Officer SP Josephine Adeh noted that Commissioner of Police Miller Dantawaye recognized the constitutional right to peaceful assembly but cited credible intelligence that the protest could be infiltrated by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) or other non-state actors, posing serious risks to public safety.
Authorities assured residents that the police are prepared to protect lives and property, while urging the NLC to postpone the protest in the interest of peace.
This comes amid ongoing negotiations after the National Industrial Court suspended JUAC’s strike to allow dialogue with the FCTA and FCDA.
