The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has accused the Ibadan South-West Local Government Area of Oyo State of destroying and removing railway fixed assets worth several millions of naira along the Ibadan rail corridor.
In a statement issued on February 3, 2026, the NRC said the destruction occurred on Monday, February 2, 2026, and was allegedly led personally by the Chairman of Ibadan South-West Local Government Council, Hon. Kehinde Adeyemi Amanda.
According to the corporation, the chairman arrived at the site accompanied by a group that included thugs, individuals dressed in Nigerian Army uniforms, and operatives of Amotekun, who allegedly vandalised NRC properties along the Mile One–TAX axis.
The NRC said assets destroyed or carted away included rail tracks, sleepers, signal poles, billboards, perimeter fences, and other installations belonging to the corporation and its tenants along the corridor. It stressed that the affected area is a clearly defined and statutorily protected railway right-of-way.
The corporation further alleged that the council chairman claimed to be acting on the instructions of the state governor. Efforts by the NRC Police Command to stop the operation were reportedly resisted, forcing officers to withdraw from the scene.
Describing the incident as a grave violation of federal railway assets, the NRC said it is fully documenting the matter and will pursue appropriate security, administrative, and legal actions to safeguard its infrastructure and prevent future encroachments nationwide.
Reacting to the development, NRC Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, appealed to the Oyo State Government to intervene by calling the Ibadan South-West Local Government Chairman to order. He warned that the actions could lead to a breakdown of law and order and undermine the rights and safety of railway workers.
Dr Opeifa reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to the rule of law, stating that the NRC would continue to protect its assets and maintain operational integrity despite provocation.
The statement was signed by Callistus Unyimadu, Chief Public Relations Officer, on behalf of NRC management.
