The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Lagos State Chapter, on Saturday, January 31, 2026, held its first Congress of the year, marking a significant milestone in the association’s activities within the state.
The Congress brought together members of the association for strategic deliberations, capacity-building engagements, and the official unveiling of the NAWOJ Lagos 2026 Activities Calendar.
Addressing participants, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Lagos, Comrade Jumoke Johnson, described the Congress as a purposeful forum aimed at strengthening the association and repositioning women journalists for enhanced professional performance and societal impact.
“This Congress sets the agenda for the year. Beyond fostering unity, we are focused on equipping our members with relevant skills, amplifying women’s voices, and implementing initiatives that contribute meaningfully to society,” Johnson said.
A major highlight of the Congress was a training session on Financial Literacy for Women in Media, facilitated by Mr. Olalekan Otun. The session offered practical guidance on personal financial management, investment planning, and long-term financial sustainability for women journalists. Participants actively engaged the facilitator through insightful questions and discussions, reflecting the importance of the topic to both their professional and personal lives.
The Congress also featured the unveiling and in-depth discussion of the NAWOJ Lagos 2026 Activities Calendar, which is structured across four quarters.
In addition, Comrade Jumoke Johnson called on organisations, corporate bodies, and development partners to support NAWOJ Lagos through strategic partnerships and sponsorships to ensure the successful execution of the planned programmes.
In her remarks, the Secretary of NAWOJ Lagos, Comrade Anu M. Thomas, explained that the year’s programmes were carefully designed to address the professional development of women journalists, their roles as mothers, and broader humanitarian and societal issues.
“Our activities this year are people-centred. They focus on career growth, family life, and our collective responsibility to society,” she noted.
The Congress concluded on a positive note, with members expressing satisfaction with the deliberations and confidence in the association’s direction for the year.
Overall, participants described the Congress as productive, engaging, and impactful, reaffirming NAWOJ Lagos’ commitment to empowerment, advocacy, and professional excellence.
