President Bola Tinubu on Thursday convened an emergency security meeting with Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq following widespread outrage over the brutal killings in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.
The development came amid strong condemnation from the United Nations and Türkiye, as northern senators called for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture. In response to the violence, the Inspector-General of Police ordered the immediate deployment of tactical and intelligence teams to the affected communities.
The attack, which government sources confirmed claimed at least 75 lives, has reignited calls for the mass recruitment of security personnel, expansion of armouries, improved intelligence gathering, and firmer federal intervention. Lawmakers warned that the escalating insecurity—especially in rural areas—now poses a serious threat to national stability.
The Northern Senators Forum also urged the Federal Government to urgently strengthen security capacity and recruit more personnel to stem the rising tide of violent attacks across several states.
The appeal followed coordinated assaults in Kwara, Katsina and Benue states, which senators said had resulted in the deaths of more than 130 people.
In a condolence message issued in Abuja, the Forum’s chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, expressed sympathy with the affected states and communities, describing the attacks as deeply troubling.
Reports indicated that at least 100 people were feared dead after militants attacked Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area on Tuesday night.
While acknowledging the efforts of security agencies, Yar’Adua called on citizens to support them by providing timely intelligence and reporting suspicious activities. However, he stressed the need for urgent federal action to boost manpower and operational effectiveness to confront the growing security threats.
He extended condolences to the governments and people of Kwara, Katsina and Benue states, noting that the killings were a stark reminder of the persistent insecurity confronting the country. According to him, the Forum remains committed to backing policies that address the root causes of violence and promote lasting national stability.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ordered the immediate deployment of tactical, operational and intelligence assets to Kaiama Local Government Area. A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that 75 people were killed in the Kwara attack.
