The Kano State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that seven people lost their lives in a fatal road accident along the Kano–Hadejia road.
The confirmation followed an earlier statement by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, who had said that more than 30 people were killed in the crash.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the FRSC spokesperson in the state, Abdullahi Labaran, said the accident involved a commercial DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG, which was conveying a total of 105 persons.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash involved one commercial vehicle, a DAF trailer with registration number KTG 467 YG. A total of 105 persons were involved in the crash. Unfortunately, seven persons lost their lives, while 70 others sustained varying degrees of injuries, comprising 55 males and 15 females,” Labaran said.
He explained that the suspected causes of the crash were over-speeding and loss of control, worsened by the dangerous practice of conveying passengers alongside goods. The incident was classified as a single-vehicle fatal crash, with the road condition reported to be good and no items recovered at the scene.
According to the FRSC, the injured victims were promptly evacuated to four hospitals: Sir Sunusi Specialist Hospital, Kano, where 24 victims (17 males and seven females) were taken; Gezawa General Hospital, which received 24 victims (16 males and eight females); Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where 20 male victims were admitted; and Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital, Nasarawa, which received seven victims (five males and two females).
The Corps expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. It also cautioned motorists, particularly commercial drivers, against over-speeding, reckless driving and the illegal transportation of passengers in goods vehicles.
Labaran urged members of the public to remain safety-conscious and comply strictly with traffic regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives and property.
