The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of key welfare provisions contained in its renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the development in a directive issued to Vice-Chancellors of federal universities on Monday, approving a 40 per cent increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, effective from January 1, 2026.
Alausa said the move reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving the welfare of academic staff and ensuring stability within the nation’s university system.
According to him, some federal universities have already begun reflecting the approved increment in their salary payments. He directed all federal universities yet to comply to immediately integrate the increase into their payroll structures to ensure that all eligible academic staff benefit.
The minister also stressed the need for strict compliance with the implementation of the Consolidated Tools Allowance (CATA), noting that its payment has been approved, circularised by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), and provided for in the 2026 budget.
He urged university managements to deploy available resources to ensure the prompt payment of CATA in line with NSIWC guidelines.
Alausa said the timely implementation of both the CAA increase and CATA would help strengthen the academic environment, boost staff morale, and enhance teaching, research, and learning outcomes across federal universities.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to honour agreements with education sector stakeholders, stressing its commitment to constructive engagement, transparency, industrial harmony, and the continuous improvement of quality education in Nigeria.
