Bayern Munich booked their place in the German Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2020 with a 2–0 victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday.
Harry Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Luis Diaz struck on the counter, with both goals coming within a four-minute spell early in the second half. Kane’s penalty was his 39th goal in all competitions this season, while Diaz scored his fifth in his last three matches.
Leipzig, who had already suffered two heavy defeats to Bayern this season, showed improvement and nearly scored early, with Christoph Baumgartner’s acrobatic strike ruled out for a tight offside. Bayern gradually seized control, and Serge Gnabry was denied by a fine save from Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt before Kane converted the penalty after Vandevoordt fouled Josip Stanisic in the box.
Four minutes later, Diaz doubled Bayern’s lead on a swift counter, sealing the win and a spot in the semi-finals alongside defending champions Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen, and Freiburg.
Bayern, record winners of the competition with 20 titles, had not reached the semi-finals since defeating Leverkusen in the 2020 final. The German Cup final is scheduled for May 23 at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.
